Dear Blue Cohort Student,
We are thrilled to welcome you to DeLaSalle High School and the 2020-21 school year!
Our staff are excited to get back to teaching and have been busy designing engaging and innovative lessons that are responsive to a new era of instruction. While DeLaSalle will begin school with a hybrid model that provides a mix of in-person and distance learning for students, you, along with many other students, will be able to participate in classes exclusively through distance learning.
As a member of the Blue Cohort, we are excited to have you participate in classes online through distance learning Monday through Friday. Please know that through the use of Swivl, an innovative technology that immerses students in a virtual classroom experience, you will be able to follow along with your teacher and classmates as if you are in the classroom
Whether students participate in hybrid or full distance learning, all students will be educated with high expectations for their holistic well-being and academic preparation. We know that the experience of starting school during a pandemic presents uncertainties, but the faith and strength of our Catholic, Lasallian community is what will enable us to begin the new school year with a strong plan focused on delivering exceptional instruction in the safest way possible.
Health and safety our top priority
Our decision to begin the school under a hybrid model was informed by listening sessions and surveys conducted with students, staff and more than 450 families. In turn, we have addressed the needs and concerns identified by our Lasallian community through a Pandemic Preparedness Plan and strict health protocol expectations for all students, staff and visitors. It is this commitment to health and safety that will allow us to offer our students and staff the opportunity to experience an on-campus community this school year.
Students participating in classes exclusively through distance learning
The Blue Cohort: Students who prefer to do all their learning through distance learning full time, five days a week. Students who will be doing distance learning Monday through Friday will follow the schedule for all students as outlined in the block schedule chart below.
How the hybrid model will work
Under the hybrid model, students will be split into two cohorts based on the first letter of their last name. Each cohort of students will attend classes together in-person twice a week and then attend class through distance learning three times a week.
Student Cohorts participating in classes on campus and through distance learning:
- The Gold Cohort (last names begin with A-K): Have classes on campus Monday and Tuesday and learn remotely Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
- The Silver Cohort (last names begin with L-Z): Have classes on campus Thursday and Friday and learn remotely Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Canvas (Learning Management System)
When participating in distance learning, all students will stay connected to their coursework, teachers and classmates with their iPads through Canvas, our learning management system. Once you login, go to the Canvas page for your course and click on the Google Meet link. When you participate in classes online, your teacher will broadcast the class through Swivl, a technology that allows you to feel like you are in the classroom with your teachers and peers.
